About This Program
Life is a Drum, so Beat It!
Percussion instruments are often called the heartbeat of life. In Life is a Drum, so Beat It!, children gain an understanding of percussion instruments as an essential part of history and human experience and will be able to classify multicultural percussion instruments by sight and sound.
Uncle Devin uses different musical instruments, along with his award-winning book, “The ABC’s of Percussion with Music CD,” to help students construct an understanding of how sounds made by percussion instruments were used to communicate. This residency will guide children in how to create and use percussion instruments to articulate non-verbal communication through pitch, force, and rhythm. Through this process, they will gain a greater understanding of why percussion instruments were some of the first forms of communication throughout many cultures around the world.
Residencies are tailored to your needs but usually include:
- A kick-off assembly
- A required orientation meeting and planning session
- A set of workshops for classes of up to 25 students each
- A student culminating or sharing event
- An evaluation meeting
Typically, residencies range from $2,000 to $3,000, but we can use your available budget and ‘work backwards’ to create a cost-effective residency for your school. We may be able to assist you in securing grant and funding opportunities.
For a rough estimate, residency prices include:
- Artist assembly (see artist’s page for pricing)
- A set of workshops ($100 each)
- A required orientation meeting and planning session ($100 each)
- An evaluation meeting ($100)
- Mileage and supply costs depend on artist location and the residency chosen.
