Young
Audiences, in partnership with Arts Education in Maryland Schools (AEMS)
Alliance and the Maryland State Arts Council - offer the Teaching
Artist Institute - a professional development program for professional
artists who perform and conduct workshops in schools. The goal
is to build the capacity of artists in our community to contribute
to student learning in and through the arts.
Each year, TAI provides
over 50 hours of training and networking to 20 artists. Artists experience:
-
A three-day retreat
in January, followed up by monthly one-day trainings in February,
March and April.
-
One-on-one coaching
from master teaching artists working within their discipline and
a curriculum specialist.
-
Opportunities to
meet in small affinity groups with other artists.
-
Opportunities to
field-test their work in a classroom with institute staff, peer
artists and teachers observing and providing feedback.
-
Opportunities to
network with educators who are interested in bringing artists into
their schools.
TAI has proven to
be a valuable resource to both the artists we train and the schools
that now have access to highly trained artists.
In the words of
Eileen Carson, Founding Director of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble,
Young Audiences artist and TAI alum:
TAI was well designed and
full of exercises that gave us an introduction to the Maryland Voluntary
State Curriculum and demonstrated many ways to teach the standards
through the artistic process. We were given instruction in designing,
writing and teaching arts integrated lessons, and then the amazing
opportunity to pilot these lessons and receive feedback from colleagues
and teachers. I am thrilled to be so inspired and to witness the
inspiration of the other artists who participated. I know that TAI
has helped me... as a teaching artist and in assisting the classroom
teacher to teach the curriculum in an exciting, actively participatory
way for the students.
And from a Baltimore City
public school fifth grade Language Arts teacher who experienced a
teaching artist as they conducted the residency:
I found the artist...to
be very well prepared. I was impressed with his understanding of
curriculum and ability to find natural connections for arts integration.
It was a true collaboration as he creatively shaped his residency
to enhance my students' learning in the arts - in this case ceramics
- and in story writing.
