Summer Arts Corps

The Summer Arts Corps is a community of exceptional, passionate artists and teachers who are invested in elevating student achievement and joy through the arts by providing spaces for creative expression, critical thinking, and social change.

The Summer Arts Corps Training program is for ARTISTS who are interested in working for SALA but need more professional development and experience in order to be hired for SALA. Learn more.

Teaching Artists earn:

  • $500 for the 40 hours of Summer Arts Corps training; and
    $8,750 for the one week of professional development and five-week Academy

Teaching Artist Apprentices earn:

  • $15/hour for the three days of professional development and the five-week Academy (full- and half-day Academy positions available)

The majority of SALA staff have their own transportation, but some have successfully commuted via public transportation and Uber/Lyft.

Teaching Artists
No. You will collaborate, team plan and team teach with a Classroom Teacher.

Teaching Artist Apprentices
No. You will assist during the arts/discipline/focus area of the day.

Teaching Artists
In the mornings, a teaching artist partners with a City Schools teacher to collaboratively plan and teach literacy and math arts-integrated lessons to elementary grade students. In the afternoons, the teaching artist, with the support of a teacher or apprentice, teaches “pure” art classes in your respective art form.

Teaching Artist Apprentices
Under the guidance of a teaching artist, the teaching artist apprentice supports the artistic and creative development of elementary grade students in art classes that represent a variety of different art forms. Most apprentices will work from 12:30-3:30 pm each day, but a limited number of all-day slots (8:30 am-3:30 pm) will be available.

Teaching Artists
No. But, you do need to have some experience working with youth. This can be through community-based spaces, camps, hospitals, nonprofits, clubs, etc.)

Maybe. After the application process (which includes an observation session) if the hiring team determines you have ample experience in arts integration and collaborative teaching then you will be hired for SALA immediately. If we feel you could use the Summer Arts Corps Training, we will invite you to complete the training before determining hiring status for SALA. Summer Arts Corps participants receive $500 for completing the training.

Teaching Artist Apprentices
No. Apprentices will only need to participate in three days of Orientation/Prep in late June 2018. Apprentices will be paid for these three days.

Teaching Artists
Yes and no. Free childcare will be provided during the Summer Arts Corps Training. Childcare will not be provided during SALA.

Teaching Artists
The class size is approx. 25 students. There is a 12:1 student-teacher ratio because all classes are team-taught by a Teaching Artist and Classroom Teacher.

Teaching Artist Apprentices
You will be assisting a Teaching Artist. The two of you will have a class size of approximately 25 students.

Yes! Info Sessions will be held on November 7th and 15th. These sessions will provide an overview of SALA and the Summer Arts Corps training program. RSVP here.
