Did you know?

YA professional development workshops for educators are designed to increase teachers’ comfort level in teaching both in and through the arts. Programs provide the basis for improving student achievement in the arts and other academic subjects. We are willing to tailor a workshop to your school’s needs and budget. Proven results of YA professional development

YA partners with the Harford County Public Schools Title I Office to provide year-long training in arts integration for teachers. The results of an evaluation of the 2011 Innovative Teaching Institute, which hosted more than 70 Harford County Title I elementary school teachers, are undeniable.

Common Core-aligned professional development

Many Young Audiences professional development programs are designed to support educators in understanding the Common Core College and Career-Ready Standards across curricular subjects. Young Audiences also offers Connecting to the CORE!, which is designed to help educators unpack the Common Core Standards through the arts while creating new lesson plans and units. Learn more about our Connecting to the CORE! program here.

Professional development workshops for credit

We offer professional development workshops for MSDE or BCPSS AU credit.

Revive, Contemplate and Integrate

Use the Walters Art Museum’s collection, work with teaching artists, and create arts-integrated lessons in this course co-led by the Walters Art Museum and Young Audiences. You will spend time in the Walters’ galleries, experience an arts-integrated lesson by a Young Audiences teaching artist, and brainstorm with other educators about arts integration. We encourage you to apply with another teacher of a different discipline (arts with non-arts teacher). Upon completion, you will receive 1 MSDE Reading and Math credit or 1 BCPSS AU credit (pending continued approval). This program is available annually in June, or upon request from school districts and other groups.

Steel Drums in the Classroom

Kevin Martin, Steel Drum Musician

Bring this month-long drum program to your school to train teachers to teach a steel drum unit for the price of a one-week residency. Learn the basics of playing and teaching the steel drum with Rockcreek Steel Drums’ lesson plans, instruments, music, and materials. Rockcreek Steel Drums will kick off the program by performing its interactive assembly, “The Steel Drum Experience,” for students. Teachers will receive a one-on-one professional development session. MSDE or AU credit may be available (pending approval). This program is available annually in April and May and is limited to 10 schools.

Sample Common Core Connection: Speaking/Listening 2 CCR Anchor Standard: Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats.

Custom-Designed Institutes

Our artists can custom design programs that best fit your school and district’s needs. Young Audiences partners with school districts and other organizations to provide effective, innovative, and comprehensive professional development institutes. These institutes focus on empowering educators to design lessons and assessment tools that develop 21st Century Skills through quality arts-integrated teaching.

Young Audiences will work with you to custom design a district-wide professional development. A hands-on comprehensive training program provides teachers with realistic, accessible, and fun techniques for integrating the arts with other academic subjects. Our staff of highly-qualified and professional artists and educators with expertise in arts integration can help design a program to best fit your time and budget needs.

Institutes may include:

  • Development of effective assessment strategies
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit and/or AU credit (pending approval)
  • Quality curriculum development and lesson planning
  • Collaboration to enhance achievement
  • On-going support and feedback throughout the school year
