Iyen
Palmer, who participates in our “Careers in the Arts” Afterschool
Program describes the impact best:
“ At
first I wasn’t sure if I could drum, but the second
day, I was drumming, hollering, and getting down. And now
I feel that I can do anything. The drum makes my spirit move.”
The
arts can be used as a vehicle for many things: to inspire, to
break down mental barriers, to build skills, to increase specific
skills, or to broaden horizons. Young Audiences of Maryland’s
artists are skilled not just in performing, but in teaching and
facilitating. Whatever your need is: whether you are a principal
looking for a way to increase parent involvement in your student’s
learning, a business looking for a way to increase employee creativity
and innovation, or a community-based organization wanting to
use an arts project to address a particular problem, YAMD staff
can work with you to custom design an experience to meet your
specific needs.

Our
partnership with Baltimore City’s innovation high school
Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) is an example
of an individually designed arts package. YAMD designs and manages
their “Career in the Arts” program which occurs every
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:45-4:45 p.m. throughout
the school year and includes the following seven week sessions
led by Young Audiences teaching artists: Performance and Production
I and II, Music, Dance, and Visual Arts.
Each
session is designed in partnership with ACCE so that students
will:
- Use
the arts to express ideas, emotions, and beliefs.
- Apply
the essential skills unique to each art form in the creation
of artistic work.
- Use
imaginative and reflective thinking during all phases of creating
and performing.
- Use
analytical and critical thinking skills to respond to works
of art.
- Make
connections between the arts and other disciplines.
- Understand
the importance of the arts to the community's cultural life
