Ballet Theatre of Maryland

* BALLET THEATRE OF MARYLAND (BTM)

NEW! Alice in Wonderland
A company of over ten dancers brings a full-fledged ballet into your school! Experience Alice in Wonderland in a “nutshell,” with excerpts from the full-length ballet based on the classic Lewis Carroll tale. Characters are created by combining ballet dance and character movement. Narration is introduced as students experience how costumes, props, ballet and musical theatre, mesh to transform Alice in Wonderland into a ballet.
Scenes include The Pool of Tears, a Mad Tea Party, Painting the Roses Red, The Cheshire Cat, etc.
Grade Level: K-6

NEW! Romeo & Juliet
Watch this classic Shakespearean Tragedy come to life through a sequence of choreographed scenes, set to Sergei Prokofiev’s original 1935 musical score. Students will experience how multiple disciplines can be linked together to tell this classic story through dance. The performance includes 30-40 minutes of performance time with an additional 10-15 minutes of demonstrations and interactions, allowing students to experience fencing, costuming and makeup, traditions and history from the
Renaissance period.
Grade Level: 6-12

An American Journey through Dance
Experience the impact of cultural diversity on the evolution of American Ballet, especially the Irish, African-American, Latino, and Native American cultures. Students will also see how classical dance can be used as a means of expressing the rhythms of a culture, or as a way of capturing its history.

Medieval Festival
During this program, dancers perform 30-40 minutes of excerpts from the production of “Excalibur” including duets, solos, and theatrical combat sword fights with a narrative about the Arthurian Legends. The excerpts are set to authentic medieval and Celtic music in abstract period costumes.

DANCE CHINA NEW YORK

NEW! China Patterns

Performed in traditional Chinese costumes, this program introduces audiences to Chinese culture though traditional dance and music. China Patterns weaves together language lessons, historical details, onstage demonstrations, audience dialogue, and active audience participation. Through dance narration, the program involves students and teachers in identifying traits, customs, and patterns of life that are illustrated in Chinese dances. Hands-on audience participation segments include all ages and demonstrates that the dances, though Chinese in origin, can be universal. The diversity of dance selections, authentic costumes, music, props, and background information makes this an excellent introduction to Chinese culture.

Origins: From West Africa to Hip Hop
DishiBem consists of three acclaimed professional dancers and musicians, who will take your students on a musical journey from the origins of music in West Africa to elements of step dance and pop rhythms in modern day Hip Hop. Their vibrant and interactive program connects history to the present day, and impresses upon students the power of music and dance as a positive tool of communication and self-expression.

Footworks Percussive Dance

* FOOTWORKS PERCUSSIVE DANCE ENSEMBLE

Keeping the Beat: Contemporary American Traditional Dance
Footworks conveys the joy of dance while illuminating the historical and multicultural perspectives of different American percussive dances. The program includes live fiddle music, American clogging and hambone, call-and-answer songs and rhythms, as well as French Canadian stepdance and South African bootdance. Footworks specializes in performing and teaching the music and dance that developed across the continent, stemming from African-American, Celtic, and Native American cultural traditions still found in Southern Appalachia. A wooden performing surface is preferred if available.

The company shares hip-hop history through interactive lecture, jaw-dropping dance, and a compelling Q&A session.  DJing, the Human Beat-Box, and the MC are only a few elements covered.

Anna Menendez

La Fiesta del Baile
Anna Menendez will engage students in her masterful performance of Spanish dance and Flamenco, while exposing them to the concept of how rhythm expresses emotions.
Students will learn basic Spanish vocabulary, use map skills to locate and identify various Spanish-speaking countries, and gain an appreciation of Spanish culture and traditional dance. A wooden floor is required for this performance.

NRITYA

Rhythms of India
Arriving in stunning costumes, Lakshmi and Lavanya introduce students to India and the different nuances of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, classical dance forms from Southern India. They gracefully integrate technical dance with storytelling in order to convey the rich imagery embedded in the art forms. Blending facial expressions and body movements, NRITYA brings interpretive traditional dances, as well as folk tales, to life.

Sankofa Dance Theater

Village Dance
Traditionally, African art forms are woven into the fabric of day-to- day life. Dance is a big part of the history of life in an African village. The theme for this presentation is “the reasons why we dance”. It paints a picture of the West African culture against a
colorful backdrop of traditional African music, song, and dance. Students are asked to join in audience participation.
